FESTIVAL IN PROGRESS… 33 days remain until the 69th Festival de Cannes, and the 2016 event is getting closer by the minute. In the offices at Rue Amélie in Paris, films are arriving by the hundreds, screenings are taking place in rapid succession, and the number of applications for accreditation continues to rise by around 5%. As we await the unveiling of the Official Selection on 14 April, stay tuned to the newsletter and get all the latest news about this year’s event on the website and official social media.

Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively, Jesse Eisenberg, Steve Carell and Parker Posey are all expected on the red carpet in Cannes on 11 May this year. Attending alongside Woody Allen, their film Café Society, showing Out of Competition, will open the 69th festival. The film will be released in French cinemas on the same day. The opening and closing ceremonies, presented by actor and comedian Laurent Lafitte, will be broadcast on free-to-air Canal+.

The Press Conference

On 14 April 2016 at 11am, Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, will announce the Official Selection of the 69th festival in front of dozens of journalists at a special press conference. THE 2016 POSTER

Thank you for all the enthusiastic responses we received when the poster was unveiled last fortnight! Designed by Hervé Chigioni and graphic designer Gilles Frappier as a nod to Jean-Luc Godard, the 2016 image, taken fromContempt, depicts steps representing a kind of ascension towards the infinite horizon of a cinema screen.

BESIDE GEORGE MILLER, JURY PRESIDENT

Australian director, screenwriter and producer George Miller has been chosen to preside the 2016 Festival de Cannes. His Jury is almost finalised, and will be revealed in the days following the announcement of the Official Selection. Together, they will award the Palme d’or and six other prizes at the end of the event, at the closing ceremony to be held on Sunday 22 May.

NAOMI KAWASE, PRESIDENT OF THE CINÉFONDATION & SHORT FILMS JURY

In 2015, Un Certain Regard opened in poetic fashion with Sweet Bean (An) by Naomi Kawase. The Festival de Cannes is honoured to announce that the Japanese director will preside the Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury for its 69th edition.
